2018 Subaru Crosstrek Review

A surprise hit for Subaru when it debuted for the 2013 model year, think of the Crosstrek as a bit-sized Outback. With small SUV dimensions and low 20s pricing, the Crosstrek sells at a quicker pace than any other Subaru not named Forester or Outback. And now for its second act, the all-new 2018 Crosstrek is more spacious, more rigid, and a bit more powerful. All-wheel drive is standard, of course, and now too is Active Torque Vectoring - helping reduce understeer, keeping the vehicle on the driver’s intended cornering path. And with 8.7” of ground clearance off-roading is most certainly in play. Don’t forget your gear - with split fold rear seat and a wider rear gate opening, the 2018 Crosstrek has a larger cargo area. Multimedia features include standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and Near Field Communication to simplify Bluetooth pairing. The 2.0i base and Premium trims come standard with a six-speed manual transmission and are available with the Lineartronic CVT. The Limited trim comes standard with the CVT featuring a 7-speed manual mode function with steering wheel paddle shifters. All trim levels with the CVT now come standard with a driver-selectable X-Mode to provide better wheel control on slippery surfaces and steep inclines. And for on-road use, a lower center of gravity and revised suspension strengthens the Crosstrek’s handling agility. Power stems from a revised version of the 2.0-liter Boxer 4 now rated at 152 horsepower, achieving up to 29mpg in combined driving. On the safety front, Subaru’s EyeSight system includes all of the latest camera-based technologies to assist the driver while new Reverse Automatic Braking can apply the brakes if an obstacle is detected while reversing. Available in base, premium and Limited, the 2018 Crosstrek starts at $22,710.
