2019 Toyota Prius AWD Review

If you’ve ever been to Vermont then you know how popular the Toyota Prius is in green country. But with the exception of about 3 months, snow can fly at any time. So in comes the 2019 Prius now available with all-wheel drive for Vermonters or anywhere road conditions get a little tricky. And of course there are no driveshafts or differentials to add weight. Nope, this all-wheel drive system is electric using a single motor generating 7hp and 40 pound-feet of torque to power the rear wheels at takeoff and then again, as needed, up to 43mph. Otherwise, the Hybrid drive system remains the same, combining the output of a 1.8-liter gas engine and 2 motor/generators to deliver 121 horsepower working through an electronic continuously variable transmission. Unlike the lithium-ion powered FWD Prius, the AWD-e models rely on a Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery which is inherently resilient to extreme temperature change providing them with excellent battery performance in cold-weather conditions. Gas mileage takes only a slight dip, from 52 to 50mpg in combined driving. The 2019 Prius also debuts new exterior styling that includes an all-new front bumper, headlamp design and taillamp design. The new AWD-e models also sport new foglamps and an all-new LED accent lamp. Inside, the Prius receives piano black accents in addition to two additional USB ports, an enlarged wireless phone charging tray, and a standard heated steering wheel. Available in LE and XLE grades, the Prius AWD-e starts at $27,310.
