2019 Honda Insight Review

The Insight was the first hybrid vehicle in the United States when Honda introduced it in 1999. But it never captivated an audience like the Toyota Prius and 4 years ago Honda ended production. Well, look whose back. For the 2019 model year, the all-new Insight continues to honor its original objective; to offer a high-mileage sedan at an affordable price. Starting at $23,725 including destination and handling, the midsized Insight earns as much as 55mpg in city driving. Honda slots it between the Civic and the Accord while also serving as a lower-priced alternative to the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid. Riding upon the excellent Civic platform and available in 3 trims, the Insight uses a 2-motor hybrid system and a 1.5-liter gasoline engine combining for 151 horsepower and 197 pound-feet of torque. ECON, SPORT and EV modes can be selected to tailor the driving experience. The 4-cylinder connects to a generator to produce electricity that either powers the propulsion motor, recharges the lithium ion battery pack or both and works without a conventional automatic transmission because the electric motor directly powers the drive axles. Honda says the Insight has been designed to deliver a luxury-class ride quality, superb cabin quietness and fun to drive while making for the ideal commuter car. Steering wheel-mounted Deceleration Selectors, similar to shift paddles, allow the driver to select between three levels of regenerative braking performance – helpful in downhill driving for increasing battery charging. And the battery doesn’t interfere with trunk capacity which is large at over 15 cubic feet. This top-level Touring trim adds in a host of upgrades including navigation, a moonroof, LED fogs, premium 10-speaker audio, leather, 17” wheels, power seats with heating, dual zone climate control and more. Due to all of the goodies, gas mileage of this specific model is less, rated at 51mpg city/45 mpg highway. The Honda Sensing suite of active safety features including collision mitigation and avoidance is standard on all models.
