2023 Volvo S60 Recharge Review

Volvo sold less than 10,000 traditional cars in the U.S. last year as the XC60 and XC90 SUVs do the heavy lifting for the Scandinavian automaker. And those two cars – the S60 and S90 – like all of Volvo’s 2023 lineup no longer come without some sort of electrification. That may mean a mild-hybrid, a plug-in hybrid like this one, or an all-electric. Last year Volvo upgraded the Recharge T8’s powertrain to include a new long-range battery and a more powerful electric motor at the rear. By also replacing the turbo-four’s supercharger with some e-boost, output has been pushed all the way to a combined 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque making this, along with the other Recharge T8 models, the most powerful cars Volvo has ever produced. Beefing up the electric components has also resulted in nearly double the S60’s part-time EV capabilities – from 22 miles to 41 miles of all-electric range. Total driving range is an impressive 530 miles.
Also last year, Volvo introduced a new Black Edition S60 making fewer than 450 examples for the 2022 model year but don’t fret - it’s back for 2023. It’s offered in two colors – white and black, and as the name implies, features lots of darkened design bits including high gloss 19” wheels, window trim, tailpipes, and badging. This more sinister side of Volvo adds $1,945 for the theme and another $695 for the Onyx Black metallic paint. Total price of this S60 Recharge Ultimate with the Climate Package and big bucks Bowers & Wilkins Premium Sound system is $63,690. Price reducing Federal and state tax credits are still in play for the S60 PHEV but it’s best to check with your local dealer for specifics.
Like most European brands, Volvo’s changing nomenclature of its cars is confusing. This S60 is a Recharge model – Volvo uses Recharge for both its Hybrid and Electric vehicles. The T8 designation is given specifically to the plug-in hybrids while the B4 moniker is for front-wheel drive mild hybrids, while B5 and B6 designations are used for the all-wheel drive mild hybrids of various outputs. It’s mind-numbing, really. And it is the plug-in S60 and its wagon counterpart V60 which are Volvo’s quickest cars with 0-to-60mph times of 4.3 seconds. But at almost $64,000, this highly-optioned Black Edition leaves me wanting.
I love the look of this car – I have ever since this generation was introduced in 2018 and this refreshed Black Edition is even sharper. It’s compact sized but not small…other than the hump in the floor where the high voltage battery resides, adults will fit fine in the rear outboard positions and the seats can be knocked down flat for a full passthrough from the trunk. It’s just that performance hybrids are often a tricky proposition in that they deliver their zip with compromised engine feel and sound. After all, there’s a lot going on here between the electrically boosted turbo, the newly enhanced rear electric motor and the various drive modes, etc. So, while the S60 Recharge allows the driver to choose the car’s personality whether it be locked in on electric propulsion, doing typical hybrid things or driving dynamically none of it is wholly satisfying in the way a car of this ilk should be. The S60 defaults to Hybrid mode upon startup which smartly adapts to the driving situation by using whichever power combination is most effective and efficient. Pure mode prioritizes electric driving but at a much-reduced performance level – remember, the gas engine still does the majority of the grunt work here. Push the accelerator all the way to the floor in this mode and the turbo joins the party. The Power mode gives you the full, most robust T8 powertrain experience in addition to faster gear shifts from the 8-speed, quicker steering and a stiffer suspension. And lastly, there’s a constant AWD mode that keeps both axles in play when driving on slippery roads. It’s quick all right but there’s some serious computer thinking going on between the time you hammer it and the wheels start spinning.
Though its not as pronounced as it used to be, Volvos still have a distinct drivability with a likable sumptuousness to their chassis and a relaxed but fun performance edge and when in Power mode that feeling is present here. But lacking some of the visceral sensations inherent to driving for fun such as exciting sounds and the fact that the pure electric power delivery is anemic by comparison, the S60 Recharge finds itself somewhere in between just like the plug-in technology itself. The next S60 due in 2025 will undoubtedly be fully electric which is what I wish this car was now. There is one pedal drive here like in a pure EV that is initiated by shifting into B – it’s very aggressive but I like it.
The Nappa leather seats with power thigh extensions are very supportive – a Volvo staple – and the cabin is clean in its design, even a little flashy with this crystal gear selector and metal mesh décor. But I’ve never come around to this infotainment system and feel even less enthusiastic about it since Volvo turned it over to Google though I must admit the Google Assistant voice commands work quite well. I wish some of the climate functions such as heated seats and steering wheel were off screen and in showing its age you’ll still need to use this cable to connect your phone after which there’s no good place to put it. The Google services come free for 4 years after which Volvo’s going to want some money.
As far as charging is concerned, the port is located at the front on the driver’s – a preferred position – and can connect to a standard household outlet or a level 2 charger of 240 volts. The fastest charging takes only 5 hours while slow charging is about double that. Of course, extremely cold or warm temperatures will result in longer charge times. The EPA rates this S60 at 74 miles per gallon equivalent when starting with a fully charged battery and at 31mpg after it’s depleted. Premium gas is required but if your commute is typical to that of most Americans you’ll likely go through very little of that.
Using plug-in hybrids as a bridge technology to its fully electric ambitions is a smart move and Volvo offers a bunch of them. For those still in the traditional car market and are EV curious, the S60 Recharge Black Edition could make for a compelling choice with a heaping dose of Americanized style.
