2015 Infiniti QX80 Limited Review

There’s been a renaissance of sorts lately in the large, luxurious body-on-frame SUV segment with all-new or refreshed models debuting from a number of manufacturers. But when it comes to the ultra-luxury faction, this new Infiniti QX80 Limited raises the bar – awash in fine leather and wood that’ll have you seeing Bentley. Whether it’s a Lexus LX, Cadillac Escalade, or any other luxo-utility of similar avoirdupois, not a single one can match the styling grandeur of the ornate QX80. Though it’s anything but reserved, I’ve always appreciated Infiniti’s ability to design a vehicle like this with a touch of retro elegance, avoiding the boxy, butch look of the others. And now for 2015, the QX80’s updated appearance further harmonizes its brutish gracefulness with a new front fascia, grille and LED lighting. But that’s not the headline, per se. Nope, that belongs to this new Limited Package valued at $10,000. When you check that box, every other one on the order form automatically populates to generate one fully-loaded model with no options other than color – of which 3 are exclusive to the Limited, including this Mocha Almond. It’s only available with all-wheel drive, and after a few nominal accessory add-ons like the roof rail crossbars and illuminated kick plates the sticker crosses $90 grand, landing here at $91,245. And when it says Limited it means it, with this version virtually built to order with dealers getting less than 1 per month. Any skepticism I had prior to taking delivery immediately vanished as soon as I opened the door. This isn’t the typical mythomania propagated by the auto industry – what you see here is the real deal. The range of rich, earthy colors, silver accents and real wood appointments is a feast for the eyes and executed with a hand-crafted level of quality. This cabin truly is gorgeous with its Truffle Brown semi-aniline leather and matte-finish wood. And it feels and smells as authentic as it looks. Sure, there are a few overlooked moments – such as the lack of interior LED lighting, the absence of Blu-ray and the yesteryear central gauge display – but all-in-all this is a QX80 worthy of the Limited badge. The open pore look of the Ash wood, the unique seat quilting – and even the assist handles are wrapped in expensive leather; whether you’re gazing up at the Ultrasuede headliner or gripping the steering wheel wrapped in smooth hide, this Infiniti presents an above-class experience. The QX80 truly gets when it comes to taking care of the rear seat passengers with effortless seat maneuvering and a remarkably livable 3rd row with generous proportions and excellent visibility – key to not feeling claustrophobic or getting car sick.Though you could check your e-mail while you wait for the job to finish, the 3rd row seats are power folding and the 2nd row seats can be flipped with switches up front, creating big cargo space. Four more will love riding in the back and the dual screen headrests are a cool idea, but my tester’s Theater Package was glitching and not showing color. From behind the wheel, the mighty 5.6-liter 400-horsepower V8 and brilliantly smart 7-speed auto provide the backbone for the adept driving experience. It’s big but not at all sloppy with a front and rear double wishbone suspension and a hydraulic motion control system to reduce body lean – good idea in a vehicle that’s closing in on 3 tons. Riding on these exclusive dark chrome finish 22” Bridgestones, the ride quality is firmer than some of its competitors, tempered with a more dialed-in backroad drivability. It’s also very quiet inside. I cannot overstate how much I loved owning this for the week. We went everywhere in it and the QX80 Limited has it all and then some. My favorites; the super-hot heated steering wheel, killer Bose 13-speaker sound system, and stress relieving around view monitor. The least appealing aspect; gas mileage which is rated at 14mpg city/20mpg highway on recommended premium. But from advanced safety electronics to the concierge of Infiniti Connection, this is a rig that can tow 8,500 pounds, slop through the mud in 4-low and whisk you off to a luxury hotel all in the same day. And hey, who wouldn’t love that?
