2015 Volkswagen Golf R Review

The enthusiast’s most desired Volkswagen is the high-performance compact hatch known as the Golf R. Elevated to excitement levels even beyond those of the fleet-of-foot GTI, the exclusive Golf R brings VW’s ‘A’ game to those who can’t get enough speed and handling. This all-new 2015 model is based upon the new Golf architecture and is the most powerful version ever sold in North America. Modifying the company’s 2.0-liter turbo-4 through an extensive motorsports-style development program produces outstanding output of 290 horsepower while being considerably more fuel efficient than the previous generation, rated at 23mpg city/30mpg highway on premium. Like all Golf Rs before it, this one also uses 4MOTION all-wheel drive but with advancements that eliminate nearly all traction loses. Up to 50% of the power can be routed to the rear wheels while the XDS+ Cross Differential system acts as a limited slip at both the front and the rear. Steering response has improved and the sport suspension has been retuned for maximum driving fun as well as good long-distance comfort. As an option, the DCC adaptive damping system takes control a step farther by allowing the driver to choose between Normal, Comfort and Sport modes. The DSG automatic transmission gets the Golf R to 60mph the fastest, taking under 5-seconds and includes 3 driving programs while a 6-speed manual is also offered for purists. An upgraded interior with leather sport seats and numerous ‘R’ logos is standard. Available only in 4-door trim, pricing starts at $37,415 including destination.
