2018 Hyundai Kona Review

Crossovers are hot and small ones sell like hotcakes. So Hyundai has added another to their lineup, their smallest one yet; the 2018 Kona. It’s what the industry likes to refer to as an active lifestyles vehicle. Smaller than the Tucson, Hyundai has developed this model for urban and adventure-oriented driving environments. Joining the Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R and Mazda CX-3 crowd, the Kona rides on an all-new platform, ostensibly replacing the recently departed Accent hatchback but with a tougher look, greater ground clearance and a commanding seating position. Its design is bold and color choices like this Lime Twist will assure you attention. Hyundai says not to fear its small footprint because the Kona delivers outstanding interior roominess, especially in front headroom. The powertrain layout is also designed to create a compact platform capable of incorporating the car’s four-wheel-drive system while maintaining interior space. There’s over 19 cubic feet of rear cargo volume with the seats upright, far more than the Mazda CX-3. The entry-level engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder running on the hybrid-friendly Atkinson Cycle, expect this isn’t a hybrid. Paired with a 6-speed automatic and making 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque it should be very fuel efficient. Limited and Ultimate trims go for the gusto with a 1.6-liter turbo-4 producing 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque paired to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic. Kona was developed with a focus on enhanced driving dynamics and responsive performance for a variety of urban and multi-surface driving conditions. Hyundai says “the long wheelbase, short overhangs and wide track create a planted stance that results in exceptional agility in urban environments with enhanced linear stability and ride comfort.” 2WD models have a rigid torsion beam design while AWD drive models uses an independent, dual-arm multi-link design, optimizing ride comfort and stability in the wider ranges of off-road suspension articulation. Pricing starts in the low 20s when it arrives in dealerships this spring.
