All 2022 Ford Explorer Timberlines are powered by the Blue Oval's 2.3-liter EcoBoost l-4, delivering 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, and a 10-speed auto sends the power to all four wheels. And yes, there's a real Torsen limited-slip differential on the rear axle. No open diffs over here. The trim, which debuted last year, goes beyond a simple appearance package. The 2022 Ford Explorer Timberline includes hardware upgrades for getting farther off the beaten path. This distinguishes it from many competitors that offer cosmetic off-road packages without substantial mechanical improvements.

It can't match the Jeep's off-road capability, but is roughly equivalent to the Subaru as long as 8.7 inches of ground clearance meets your needs. You certainly can't get a green interior in a Subaru or Jeep, and neither of those has three rows of seats. My tester was equipped with Ford Co-Pilot Assist+, a robust suite of active safety features which includes Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert, a Lane-Keeping System, and Auto High-Beam Headlamps. The Timberline successfully bridges family SUV practicality with enhanced adventure capability, making it appealing for buyers who need seven seats during the week and want to explore forest roads on weekends.
